While it may be hard to believe, considering millions upon millions of people utilize Chiropractic’s natural approach to healing, performance, and wellness everyday, but there are some people who are unaware of the many benefits that the chiropractic lifestyle can provide for them AND their families. Weird right?!

While Chiropractic’s unique identity as a vitalistic, drugless and surgical-free health science is well known by other referring Doctors (MD, DO, PT, DMD, ACU ), on the sidelines of almost every major professional sports team (NFL, MLB, NBA, NHL, PGA ) and utilized by most elite athletes of all sports (Olympics, NCAA, IFBB, CrossFit, Ultra-marathon), it is true that some in the general public may have some confusion regarding what chiropractic is and how it effects the body.

Essentially Chiropractors are THE Experts in Human Anatomy. The practice of Chiropractic focuses on disorders of the the nervous system, the muscular system, the skeletal system, and the effects of these disorders on overall health. Chiropractic treatments are most often used to treat neuro-musculo-skeletal complaints, including but not limited to back pain, neck pain, headaches, shoulder pain, hip pain, joint pain, fibromyalgia, TMJD, carpal tunnel, plantar fasciitis, concussion, and auto accident whiplash recovery.

Doctors of Chiropractic (D.C.)  or chiropractic physicians, practice a hands-on, drug-free approach to health care that includes a complete patient examination, diagnosis and treatment. Chiropractors have the broad diagnostic skills of a medical doctor and also have the expertise to instruct therapeutic and rehabilitative exercise as a physical therapist. Additionally chiropractors are licensed to provide nutritional, dietary and lifestyle counseling like nutritionists, helping to achieve better overall health for their patients. Like their MD colleagues, doctors of chiropractic are nationally accredited and subject to the boundaries established and regulated by state licensing boards. However, because their education in four-year doctoral graduate school programs does not involve drugs or surgery, they develop a tremendous skill set in manual healing methods, exercise therapy, and the use of natural whole-food sources (on which most drugs are based) to treat many conditions.

At its heart, Chiropractic is pure, natural, and the most cost-effective option for gaining and maintaining your health, optimizing your performance, or just living really well! Besides, with all the information available, should anyone now-a-days seriously still consider MORE drugs and MORE surgery to equate to MORE health? The propaganda of “Better living through pharmaceuticals” was coined in 1935, died in 1982 and thankfully sanity and a return to organic, chemical-free, natural living has returned in our modern information era. Not even considering the societal costs of the Opioid Epidemic or the dramatic price increases in drugs like insulin, it is and has always been very profitable to invest in your health with the drug-free approach of Chiropractic.

Chiropractors assess patients through clinical examination, laboratory testing, diagnostic imaging and other diagnostic interventions to determine what chiropractic treatment protocol is appropriate or sometimes when it is not appropriate. Chiropractors readily refer patients to the appropriate health care provider when conservative care is not suitable for the patient’s condition. In many cases, such as lower back pain, chiropractic care should be a patient's primary method of treatment. However when severe degeneration and extensive damage does exist, chiropractic services can complement and support appropriate medical treatments such as surgery by relieving the musculoskeletal pain without the use of drugs.

If you have ever searched for chiropractic on YouTube, the procedure performed is called a chiropractic adjustment. The purpose of this spinal manipulation is remove the "subluxation” -or to restore joint mobility by manually applying a controlled force into joints that have become “hypomobile” – or restricted in their movement – as a result of a tissue injury. This tissue injury can be caused by a single traumatic event, such as a car accident, improper lifting of an object, or through repetitive stresses, such as shoveling, raking or sitting in an awkward position with poor spinal posture for an extended period of time (ie: having a desk job or starting down at your phone all day). Additionally besides these physical stresses, chemical stresses and even emotional stresses play significant parts in the creation of subluxations. In any case, injured tissues undergo physical and chemical changes that cause inflammation, pain, and diminished function of those individual cells. A Chiropractic adjustment of the affected joint and tissues, restores mobility, thereby alleviating pain and muscle tightness, and begins allowing the nervous system to communicate freely and without any interference.

For most, the Chiropractic Adjustment really does feel amazing, sounds very satisfying, but rarely causes discomfort. The few patients who do report that the mild soreness following treatment is the same as if after exercise and gone within a day or so. After an adjustment most patients can feel their nervous system is working better, have a much better range of motion in their joints, and seriously improved posture. Depending on your care plan, Doctors of Chiropractic may also provide corrective strengthening exercises to restore the normal motor patterns to lock in and help the adjustment and great posture to hold. Combine all that physical work with some delicious whole-food meal options and you have yourself a decent start on your path towards a more healthier you!

As portal-of-entry doctors, you do not need a referral to see a Chiropractor. While every person’s financial/insurance situation is different, Chiropractic as a profession has always championed the principle that every citizen in the world has the right to freedom of choice with health care and should be able to select the doctor AND the healing art of his/her choice. The Science, Art, and Philosophy of Chiropractic was born in America in 1895 and has the american ideal of Liberty at its core. Ultimately you are the one responsible and accountable for your health, and as with all of your health choices, it behooves you be informed to make quality decisions for yourself and for the sake of your family.

So FYI-the term ‘chiropractic’ comes from the Greek words cheir (meaning ‘hand’) and praktos (meaning ‘done’), i.e. Done by Hand. In Chiropractic and as with most expertly designed products, things done by hand are of better quality, higher craftsmanship, and retain their value much longer than machine-made or mass-produced. In making informed decisions about healthcare, one should critically consider these details. The Chiropractic approach has proven effective for over 100 years and our clinical data has been verifying what our patients have been saying all along -the RIGHT touch makes all the difference!
